Artist, painter and teacher, Carrick lives and works in South Staffordshire but paints scenes from all over Britain and abroad.
His artwork has been recognised, exhibited in galleries in Britain and Amsterdam.
Starting out as a painter of large abstract expressionist landscapes, Carrick exhibited successfully with several Birmingham based art galleries including City Art and The Artlounge, but over time, his style has become more representational and has focused more on the landscape, and less on the abstract.
He works predominately in oils on canvas/panel through the build up of layers of light shadow.
Living in South Staffordshire with his wife and 2 children, he enjoys exploring the day and finding new scenes to capture in paint. He enjoys painting en plein air and tries to get out as often as circumstance would allow, but also enjoys having the comfort and accessibility of the studio.
"Everyday I discover something new with painting. No 2 paintings are ever alike. Each painting has a life of it's own, thus the processes used when making them are also ever evolving. Some days I will paint with nothing but a 2 inch brush, others I will butter the canvas with a palette knife. No 2 days are ever the same.
The themes in my paintings have changed with time, but the one thing that interests me the most is light. Exloring the difference in light within the city and the light of the ountry side provide me with plenty of source material when painting.
As a painter, light is the single most important thing element I try to capture, but I also want convey the feel, mood and atmosphere of the scene from it's inception: the smell of the sea in a harbour, the cold of the fog as it rolls into the early morning city, or the heat of the midday sun in the Spanish desert. All these things get caught in the paint and live on in my memory."
